Invariably, crises come in threes.
The most recent occasion happened in the last week. First, perpetual rain overwhelmed our sump pump, and part of our basement flooded. This was almost entirely confined to the laundry room, but a house's concrete foundation is not typically the right kind of concrete to handle water like this, which can cause cracks to form. Second, the water line into our house, in another part of the basement, decided it was old enough the seal on the main valve should fail and began to leak, again covering a large part of the concrete floor with water. Third, a gas leak was discovered in our furnace. This appears to have begun within the last day, possibly even just this morning, as we pass by the furnace regularly and have never noticed the distinct smell before, nor do we have any symptoms normally associated with an in-home gas leak. This was quickly fixed.
Hopefully chance does not determine the first two crises count as just one, since both are water elemental, so we should be in the clear for a while. Otherwise, assume the house caught fire and we all died.
