I am a fan of the original Highlander film, but I accept that it has many, many flaws. When it comes to movie remakes, Hollywood should restrict themselves only to remakes/reboots of movies which had great potential but had poor execution (many years later, preferably; take time to figure out what went wrong before, other than just ‘box office disappointment’).

In 2022, I wrote a review for Highlander, which concluded:

While I am hesitant to hope for a remake, wary that out-of-touch studio executives could botch the film with their meddling (a fear not unwarranted after the many sequels and TV series repeatedly contradicted the original film), there are many ways this story could be improved. A more detailed script to fill out the world and personalities, and an appropriate budget to make up for the original’s shortcomings.

Finally, Highlander is getting its remake/reboot, with the first wave of production photos arriving today.

Highlander 01

The immortal warriors of the setting follow a mandate/compulsion that violence is forbidden on ‘holy ground’. In the original movie, Christianity was the dominant religion, and a church/cathedral was the only real holy ground given any attention. I am guessing this image is meant to convey that the rule applies to sacred spaces of any religion.

Highlander 02

I’m optimistic at the moment.
